Engine Assembly
Engine fasteners endure extreme conditions: high heat, vibration, repeated thermal cycling, and oil/coolant exposure.
Recommended grades:
Class 10.9 / 12.9 Socket Head Cap Screws
(metric) — engine block bolts, cylinder head fasteners (consult manufacturer specs)
Grade 8 Hex Cap Screws
(inch) — accessory mounting, engine accessory brackets
Recommended finishes:
- Black Oxide (most common, no plating to flake into oil)
- Phosphate & Oil (extra corrosion resistance)
- Bare alloy (when manufacturer specifies)
Suspension & Chassis
Suspension fasteners must resist vibration loosening while handling cyclic loads from road impacts.
Critical requirements:
- Grade 8 (or Class 10.9+) for primary suspension connections
- Lock washers, lock nuts, or thread locker for vibration resistance
- Castle nuts with cotter pins for safety-critical ball joint and tie rod connections
- Proper torque per manufacturer specifications
Best practices:
- Replace fasteners during major suspension work, don't reuse
- Use new lock nuts (nylon insert lock nuts max 5-7 reuse cycles)
- Apply anti-seize to prevent galling on aluminum components
Frame & Body
Body and frame connections balance strength, corrosion resistance, and serviceability.
Common selections:
- Grade 5 zinc-plated hex cap screws (general body work)
- Grade 8 yellow zinc dichromate (high-stress mounts — note: not RoHS compliant)
- Grade 8 zinc CR+3 (high-stress, RoHS compliant)
- Stainless steel (visible body trim, marine applications)
Brake Systems
Brake-critical fasteners must meet exact OEM specifications. We can supply DOT/NHTSA-compliant fasteners on special order. Never substitute lower-grade fasteners in brake systems.
Exhaust Systems
Exhaust temperature cycling requires:
High-temp stainless (309, 310, 316) for headers and manifolds
Plain alloy steel with thread anti-seize for general exhaust connections
Avoid plated fasteners — coatings can off-gas at exhaust temperatures
Imperial vs Metric Matching
European and Asian vehicles use metric fasteners (Class 8.8, 10.9, 12.9). American cars typically use inch (Grade 5, Grade 8). Conversion roughly:

Don't mix systems
A 1/2" hex cap screw won't thread into a M12 hole, even though the diameters are similar (1/2" = 12.7mm). Match the original specification exactly.
