Coupling Nuts

Coupling nuts are long hex nuts used to join two pieces of threaded rod or extend the reach of a bolt or stud. Their extended length engages more threads for a strong, in-line connection. They're essential for building up threaded rod runs in hangers, anchors, and tie rods. We stock coupling nuts across grades and materials in coarse and fine thread.

How Coupling Nuts Work

A coupling nut threads onto two rods from opposite ends, joining them into a longer continuous threaded length. The long body ensures ample thread engagement on each rod for full strength. Some have a sight hole or witness mark at the center so you can confirm each rod is threaded in to the proper depth.

Thread Engagement Matters

For full strength, each rod should engage at least the rod's diameter in thread length inside the coupling — ideally to the center. Under-engaging one side creates a weak joint. The center sight hole, where present, helps verify both rods meet properly.

Materials and Finishes

Steel with zinc plating: the economical standard. 18-8 and 316 stainless for corrosion resistance. Match the coupling nut's grade and material to the threaded rod it joins.

Dimensional Standards

Coupling nuts follow IFI and DIN 6334 (metric) long-nut standards, in standard coarse and fine thread.

Selecting the Right Coupling Nut

Match thread size and pitch to your rod, and material/grade to the application. Thread each rod in to at least the center for full strength. Choose stainless for corrosion resistance. Verify the coupling length suits your engagement needs — left-right (turnbuckle-style) couplings exist for adjustable assemblies.
