Retaining Rings External

67 products

External retaining rings snap into a groove machined on a shaft, forming a shoulder that retains bearings, gears, and components axially. Installed with retaining-ring pliers (or pushed on, for E-clips), they're a compact, removable alternative to a machined shoulder. We stock external retaining rings and E-clips in spring steel and stainless across the full shaft range.

How External Rings Work

The ring is spread open with pliers, slipped over the shaft, and released into a pre-machined groove, where it springs inward to grip the shaft and form a retaining shoulder. E-clips are a push-on variant that snaps onto the groove from the side without pliers — quick for smaller shafts. Both retain parts against axial movement while remaining removable.

Groove and Sizing

External rings require a correctly machined shaft groove at the right diameter and width for the ring size, and the ring is specified by the shaft diameter. Proper groove dimensions are critical for the ring's thrust capacity — follow the ring's groove spec for a secure, load-bearing fit.

Materials

Spring steel (carbon): heat-treated and phosphate-finished, the standard. Stainless: corrosion resistance for wet and outdoor use while retaining spring force. Match to the environment.

Selecting the Right External Retaining Ring

Match the ring to the shaft diameter and machine the groove to spec. Choose spring steel for general use, stainless for corrosion, and E-clips for quick push-on retention on small shafts. Use proper pliers, orient the sharp edge against the load, and confirm the thrust rating suits your application.

Use the filters to narrow by shaft size, style, and material. Orders before 12 PM ET ship same day.
