Toggle Bolts

Toggle bolts anchor heavy items to hollow walls — drywall, plaster, hollow block — where there's a void behind the surface. Spring-loaded wings open behind the wall and spread the load across a wide area, giving the highest holding power of any hollow-wall anchor. We stock spring-wing toggle bolts for demanding hollow-wall fastening.

How Toggle Bolts Work

The folded wings are passed through a drilled hole, then spring open behind the wall. As the bolt is tightened, the wings draw against the back of the wall, distributing load over a large area — far more than a plastic anchor or self-drilling anchor can. This makes toggle bolts the choice for heavy fixtures, cabinets, and equipment on hollow walls.

Spring-Wing vs. Strap Toggles

Spring-wing: metal wings snap open behind the wall — strongest, but the wings drop into the cavity if the bolt is removed. Strap toggles: a plastic strap holds the toggle in place so the bolt can be removed and reinstalled without losing the anchor. Choose spring-wing for maximum strength, strap for serviceability.

Key Limitation

Toggle bolts need clearance behind the wall for the wings to open, and the hole must be large enough to pass the folded wings — which means a larger hole than the bolt. Plan the hole and cavity depth before installing.

Selecting the Right Toggle Bolt

Match the bolt size to the load and the wing size to the wall cavity clearance. Drill the hole large enough to pass the folded wings, hold the fixture in place as you tighten (spring-wing wings are lost if the bolt is removed), and confirm adequate cavity depth. For solid masonry, use a masonry anchor instead.
