Drywall Screws

Drywall screws attach gypsum board to wood or metal framing. Their bugle head self-countersinks into the paper face without tearing it, and their sharp point and aggressive thread drive fast with a screw gun. We stock drywall screws in coarse and fine thread across all common lengths and finishes.

Coarse vs. Fine Thread

Coarse thread: wide, deep threads that grip wood studs and framing — the standard for wood-frame construction. Fine thread: closer threads designed to cut and hold in metal studs without stripping. Using the wrong thread is the most common drywall screw mistake — coarse spins out in metal, fine doesn't bite wood well.

The Bugle Head

The bugle-shaped head transitions smoothly from shank to a wide flat top, distributing pressure so the screw seats just below the board surface and dimples the paper without breaking it. This lets the fastener be hidden under joint compound for a finished wall.

Finishes

Black phosphate: the standard interior finish, economical and paintable. Zinc: added corrosion resistance for damp areas. For exterior or wet locations, use coated or stainless construction screws rather than standard drywall screws.

Selecting the Right Drywall Screw

Match thread to framing — coarse for wood, fine for metal studs. Size length so the screw penetrates the framing by at least 5/8" beyond the board (typically 1-1/4" for 1/2" board on wood). Drive with a drywall gun set to dimple, not break, the paper. For exterior or high-moisture areas, step up to a corrosion-resistant construction screw.
