Where 410 self-drilling screws fit

410 stainless is hardened. Choose it when a stainless screw has to drill into steel. Carbon steel self-drilling screws are the non-stainless option for steel. For aluminum or thin, soft sheet, 18-8 self-drilling screws are the alternative. 18-8 is cold-worked rather than hardened, so it is not the choice for drilling steel. See 18-8 stainless self-drilling screws.

Sizes, threads and drill points

Stocked diameters are #4, #6, #8, #10, #12, #14, 1/4", 5/16" and 3/8", in lengths from 3/8" to 8". Many titles show a gauge-TPI pair such as #6-20, #8-18, #10-16, #12-14 or 1/4"-14. Others show a machine thread such as #10-24, #12-24 or 1/4"-20. The drill point (#2, #3, #4 or #5) is in the title where specified. Match it to the material and its thickness; no drill-capacity figures are published. Length is taken from under the head to the tip. For flat heads, that is overall length. For oval heads, it ends at the top of the countersink, not the crown.

Heads, drives and finish

Head styles include hex washer, pan, pancake, flat, flat undercut, modified truss, oval and wafer. Drive options are Phillips, square, 6-lobe and combo, plus hex washer heads (most unslotted; a few slotted). Some hex washer heads have a bonded neoprene washer. Security versions are tamper-resistant, in pan and flat heads with pin-in 6-lobe or pin-in hex drives, #6 to #14. Security drives need a matching driver bit. Nearly all are passivated; a few are black oxide.

410 stainless self-drilling screw FAQs

Can 410 stainless self-drilling screws drill into steel?

Yes. 410 is a hardened stainless, which makes it the stainless option for drilling into steel. Match the drill point to the material and its thickness.

How do 410 and 18-8 stainless self-drilling screws differ?

410 is hardened; 18-8 is cold-worked, not hardened. Use 18-8 for aluminum and thin or soft sheet, and 410 or carbon steel for drilling into steel.

How do I pick a drill point?

Where specified, the title names the point: #2, #3, #4 or #5. Choose it for the material and its thickness, since no drill-capacity figures are published.

Are tamper-resistant 410 self-drilling screws available?

Yes. Security versions use pan and flat heads with pin-in 6-lobe or pin-in hex drives. Security drives need a matching driver bit.

Which pack sizes are available?

Each size comes as a Package or a Bulk Box. The piece count is shown on each variant.
