Taps & Dies

0 products

Taps cut internal threads in a drilled hole; dies cut external threads on rod or repair damaged bolt threads. Essential for custom threading, thread repair, and fabrication, they come in inch and metric across the common thread series. We stock taps and dies in durable high-speed steel.

Tap Types

Taper taps: a gradual lead-in for easy starting, especially in through-holes. Plug taps: the general-purpose standard, a moderate lead. Bottoming taps: minimal lead to thread close to the bottom of a blind hole. A common sequence is to start with a taper, then finish a blind hole with a bottoming tap.

Tap Drill Size Matters

Cutting good internal threads requires the correct tap drill size — the hole must be the thread's minor diameter so there's material to cut without breaking the tap. Each thread size has a specified tap drill; using the wrong drill either strips the threads (too large) or snaps the tap (too small). Match the drill to the tap.

Dies and Thread Repair

Dies cut external threads on rod or bolt stock and re-cut (chase) damaged threads to restore them. A die and tap set covers both internal and external threading and is invaluable for cleaning up rusted or buggered threads in the field.

Selecting the Right Tap or Die

Match the tap/die to the exact thread size and pitch (inch UNC/UNF or metric coarse/fine). Use the correct tap drill for taps, choose taper for starting and bottoming for blind holes, and use cutting fluid on metal. Back off periodically to clear chips and avoid breaking the tap. HSS suits most materials.
