Drive Screws

Drive screws are hammer-driven fasteners with multiple-start helical threads that bite into a pre-drilled hole when struck. They create a fast, permanent attachment for nameplates, ID tags, signs, and light-duty fastening where a turned screw isn't needed. We stock drive screws in U-type and round head styles.

How Drive Screws Work

Instead of being turned, a drive screw is hammered straight into a pilot hole. Its steep, multi-start thread cuts into the hole wall as it's driven, locking it permanently in place. Removal is difficult by design — these are meant to stay put, which is why they're used for tamper-resistant nameplates and permanent ID.

Types

U-type (Type U): the common round-head drive screw with a hardened multi-start thread, for metal and plastic. Round head: a finished appearance for visible nameplate mounting. Both install with a hammer into a correctly-sized pilot hole.

Materials and Finishes

Steel (hardened) with zinc plating for general use, and stainless for corrosion resistance on exterior plates and tags. The thread must be harder than the host material to cut and hold.

Selecting the Right Drive Screw

Drill the correct pilot hole size for the screw and host material — too small splits or stops the screw, too large loses holding power. Choose U-type for general permanent fastening, round head for finished nameplates. Select material for the environment, and remember these are essentially permanent once driven.
