Drill Bits (Metal)
0 products
Metal-cutting drill bits bore clean, accurate holes in steel, stainless, aluminum, and other metals. The right bit material and geometry make the difference between fast, clean holes and burnt edges or broken bits. We stock metal drill bits in HSS, cobalt, and coated grades across jobber and specialty lengths.
Bit Materials
HSS (high-speed steel): the economical general-purpose choice for mild steel, aluminum, and wood. Cobalt (M35/M42): alloyed with cobalt to retain hardness at high heat — the choice for stainless steel and hardened metals where HSS dulls fast. Titanium-coated (TiN): HSS with a hard coating for longer life and reduced friction in general metal drilling.
Lengths and Types
Jobber length: the standard, balancing reach and rigidity. Screw machine (stub): short and rigid for precise, deep-accuracy holes and hard metals. Step bits: drill multiple hole sizes and deburr thin sheet metal in one tool.
Choosing by Material
For mild steel and aluminum, HSS or titanium-coated bits work well. For stainless steel, hardened steel, or cast iron, cobalt is strongly preferred — it survives the heat that destroys HSS. Match the bit to the hardest material you'll drill.
Selecting the Right Metal Drill Bit
Choose cobalt for stainless and hard metals, HSS or coated for general steel and aluminum. Use cutting fluid on steel and stainless, run the correct (slower) speed for larger bits and harder materials, and keep steady pressure. For thin sheet metal, a step bit gives clean, burr-free holes.
Use the filters to narrow by size, material, and length. Orders before 12 PM ET ship same day.
